Exactly what to post on TikTok, IG Reels, and X from Day -14 to Day +14. Five proven hook formulas, a fan mobilization system, and a collab pitch template.
This is the day-by-day posting schedule for your release window. TikTok and IG Reels get the video content. X gets the text layer: context, commentary, behind-the-scenes thought. Don't treat all three platforms the same.
The hook is the first 2-3 seconds of your video. If it doesn't stop the scroll, nothing else matters. These five formulas are proven across music promotion specifically.
Same formulas, different emphasis. The genre you work in shapes which hook types convert best and how you should frame the opening line.
| Genre | Strongest hook formulas | What actually opens the scroll |
|---|---|---|
| Hip-Hop / Rap | Contradiction, Behind-the-Scenes | Receipts and proof. Lead with a number, a placement, a story with a before and after. Authenticity is the currency — manufactured hooks read as fake immediately. |
| R&B / Soul | Specific Moment, Vulnerable Take | Emotional precision. The more specific the feeling, the wider the reach. "This song is for the person who stayed too long" outperforms "this song is about love." Give the feeling a scene. |
| Indie / Alternative | Vulnerable Take, Behind-the-Scenes | Story and texture. Indie audiences follow the person before the song. Show the creative process, share the weird inspiration, reveal the draft that didn't work. Honesty about the craft converts. |
| Pop | Specific Moment, Direct Challenge | Feeling states and participation. Lead with a relatable micro-moment ("this song for when you're getting ready and already running 20 minutes late"). Challenges and comment prompts drive the interaction the algorithm rewards. |
| Electronic / EDM | Behind-the-Scenes, Contradiction | Production and process. Electronic audiences are often producers or producers-in-training. "I made this with one sample and a broken plugin" or "here's the 4-bar loop before I touched it" pulls heavy. The technical reveal is your hook. |
Your existing fans are an untapped promotional channel. Most artists ignore them and spend money on ads instead. Activating 50 real fans is worth more than 500 random ad impressions on release week.
Two days before release, send this message to your most engaged fans (DMs or email list). Personalize it. Don't copy-paste identically to 100 people.
The most effective fan activation runs on SMS or direct message, not social posts. Start building your list now so the next release has a direct line. Tool options: Community, Subtext, or a simple email list via Brevo. At minimum, collect emails from your merch table, link in bio, and any live shows.
Artist collaborations are one of the highest-ROI promotional moves available. A collab with an artist who has a similar audience size can double your release reach at zero cost. The pitch is almost always the blocker.
Target artists with a similar-size audience (within 2x of your numbers), complementary genre, and an active posting cadence. Don't reach for artists with 10x your following: the value exchange is off and they won't respond. Don't approach artists with no social presence; there's nothing to cross-promote to.
