Meta Ads Setup Guide for Musicians

Meta (Facebook + Instagram) is the most accessible paid channel for independent artists. The setup has more steps than it should, but each one matters. Missing any step early means wasted spend later.

Before you spend a dollar: Your ad account needs a Pixel installed on your landing page or link-in-bio site. Without it, you cannot retarget, cannot optimize for link clicks, and cannot build custom audiences. Set this up first, even if you don't run ads yet.

Step-by-step setup

Budget Tiers

What you can realistically accomplish at each spend level. These are not minimum requirements. They're calibration tools so you can set the right expectation before you spend.

$5/day
Testing phase
  • Test 1 creative against cold audience
  • Learn which hook style performs
  • Collect first 100-200 video views
  • Do not expect streams from this spend
  • Goal: data, not results
$20/day
Scaling phase
  • Promote your winning creative from testing
  • Run cold + retargeting simultaneously
  • Expect 500-1,500 video views per day
  • Suitable for most indie release campaigns
  • Goal: reach + early saves momentum
$50/day
Launch week
  • Concentrated spend around release day
  • Run 3-5 days maximum at this level
  • Combine with organic push for multiplier effect
  • Requires a proven creative. Don't scale a bad ad.
  • Goal: algorithmic signal in key window
The testing rule: Never scale a creative you haven't tested at low spend first. A bad ad at $50/day burns four times as fast as a bad ad at $12/day. Spend $30-50 testing before committing to a launch budget.

Ad Creative Brief Template

Fill this out before you film anything. The brief forces every decision before production, which is when changing your mind is free. Changing your mind after filming costs a reshoot.

Ad creative brief — one brief per ad unit
Song being promoted: [Title] Platform: Instagram Feed / Instagram Reels / Facebook Feed (pick one per brief) Objective: Traffic to Spotify / Video Views / Link Clicks Hook (first 2 seconds — the thing that stops the scroll): [Write it out exactly. E.g. "Point at camera, look confused, text overlay: 'POV: you find the song you didn't know you needed'"] Build (seconds 3-12): [What happens after the hook? Show the song playing, show a relatable moment, show your face reacting. Be specific.] CTA (final 2 seconds): [What do you want them to do? "Out now on Spotify — link in bio" or "Save it" or "Stream it now"] Visual style: [Vertical 9:16 / Square 1:1] · [Phone-filmed / Studio footage / Lyric video] Audio: [Song plays throughout / Song plays in background / No audio, captions only] Text overlay: [Yes / No] · If yes, write the exact text: [__________] Target mood: [What should the viewer feel? E.g. "FOMO + curiosity" or "nostalgic + comfortable"]
The 2-second rule: If your hook doesn't land in the first 2 seconds, Meta's audience has already scrolled. Write the hook before you write anything else in this brief. The hook is not the song title. The hook is the first thing a stranger sees before they know you exist.

Retargeting Playbook

Retargeting shows a second ad to people who already watched most of your first ad. These people have already proven interest. They cost less to convert and convert at higher rates than cold traffic.

The core retargeting funnel

🎬
Cold Ad (Video)

Wide audience, artist interest targeting. Objective: Video Views. Budget: 70% of total spend. Creative: hook-driven short clip of the song.

👀
Trigger: 75% video watch

Meta automatically adds anyone who watches 75%+ of your cold video to your "75% viewers" custom audience. This builds automatically while your cold ad runs. No manual work required.

🎯
Retarget Ad (Personal)

Audience: 75% video viewers. Objective: Traffic or Link Clicks. Budget: 30% of total spend. Creative: a more personal video. Face-to-camera, the story behind the song, a genuine ask to stream or save.

🎵
Destination: Spotify / Apple Music

Landing page should be a Linkfire, Linktree, or Toneden page with both streaming links. Direct-to-Spotify links lose Apple Music listeners. Smart links capture both.

Why 75% watch time: Someone who watched 3 seconds of a 15-second video is curious. Someone who watched 11 seconds is interested. Retarget the interested group, not the curious group. The conversion rate difference is significant and so is the cost difference.

Realistic Cost Benchmarks for Music Ads

These are real ranges for independent music promotion on Meta, based on US/UK/CA/AU targeting. Expect higher CPM during Q4 (October through December) when ad inventory fills up with retail advertisers.

Metric Good Average Needs work What it measures
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) $8–$14 $15–$22 $23+ How competitive your audience is
ThruPlay rate (% who watch 15s+) 15%+ 8–14% Below 8% How well your hook retains attention
CPC (cost per link click) $0.20–$0.60 $0.61–$1.20 $1.21+ How well your CTA converts interest to action
CTR (click-through rate) 1.5%+ 0.8–1.4% Below 0.8% How relevant your ad is to your audience
Cost per Spotify stream (estimated) $0.15–$0.40 $0.41–$0.90 $0.91+ Overall campaign efficiency for music
If your CPM is above $22: Your audience is too narrow or too competitive. Broaden the age range, add a secondary country, or remove one interest layer. If your ThruPlay rate is below 8%, the hook isn't working. Don't increase budget. Fix the creative first.

When to kill an ad

After spending your daily budget three times (3 days at $5/day = $15 spent), if the ThruPlay rate is below 6% or the CPC is above $1.50, kill the ad and test a new creative. Don't let a bad ad run hoping it will improve. Meta's algorithm will keep showing it to the same pool of people who already didn't respond.
